The Center for the Arts & Sciences Donation

COMMUNITY

Today the facility, now called The Center for the Arts & Sciences, is an integral part of the greater Brazoria area's cultural, artistic and science community.

The Center also hosts a semiannual Elizabethan Madrigal Feast that features a dinner and evening of renaissance entertainment and performance of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night.

A new event The Center produces is the Texas Gulf Coast Arts Festival, a venue for artists from across the state to show and sell work, from fine sculptures and paintings to photography and jewelry.

After nearly 40 years of continuous activity, the Center found itself in need of repairs and updates. "The Join the Circle Capital Campaign is a fundraising campaign that is specific to the facility," said Wesley Copeland, Executive Director of The Brazosport Fine Arts Council. "One of the big ticket items is our HVAC project to replace all of the air conditioning. Being on the Texas Gulf Coast, we all know how absolutely crucial that is. Another goal includes new signage: an LED board outside of the building to let people know what's going on inside the building."

In 1976, the Brazosport Fine Arts Council moved the various arts and science organizations that had operated under its umbrella since the mid-1960s to the campus of Brazosport College in Lake Jackson. This collection of nonprofit groups, some formed right after World War II, included the Little Theater of Brazosport, Brazosport Music Theater, the Art League and the Natural Science Museum.

The Fine Arts Council constructed a facility on the college campus that would house all these organizations in perpetuity. With the move came some consolidation— the Little

Theater and Music Theater became Brazosport Center Stages—and along with the Art League and Natural Science Museum, a Planetarium and home base for the Brazosport Symphony Orchestra was added.

Freeport LNG Theater

For the larger of the two performance venues, Freeport LNG stepped up to help restore and modernize the facility. Its $250,000 donation will not only help pay for the building's roof and HVAC work, but also renovate and modernize the auditorium, now called the Freeport LNG Theater. Funds will go towards new curtains, new lighting instruments and controls and an innovative audio induction loop designed to broadcast performance speaker output directly to individuals with hearing impairment devices.

The 400-seat Freeport LNG Theater is the heart of the center's theatrical fare. A typical season includes five shows: a mix of dramas and musicals. The summer musical is particularly well attended and often sells out. Its ambitious shows have included Les Miserables, Hairspray, and this summer, Fiddler on the Roof. Audiences are not limited to the Brazosport area either but often travel from the five surrounding counties, including Houston and Harris County, and school children come from all of the local school districts in Brazoria County. The cast and crew are also a product of the nearby community, filling a host of positions such as costume design and production, set building and operating lighting and audio.

Wesley Copeland

"We're just so grateful for Freeport LNG's interest in The Center. Not only do we need great employers and great businesses such as Freeport LNG, who provide good solid jobs for the residents of the community, but businesses like them that recognize that there need to be places like the Center for the Arts and Sciences that feeds the minds and souls of the people as well. The fact that they see the value we bring is just such a testament to the quality of the organization that is Freeport LNG."
